“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” EPHESIANS 5:8
| H |
elp us Lord, as we seek to walk as children of light, to live according to your word, and to love like your Son taught us to love. Lead us in the way everlasting while we, like blind beasts, fall into the pits of darkness. Teach us to look up in prayer, to cry out for the great mercy that abounds in you. Without you we are nothing but a branch that withers and dies, waiting to be burned. But with you there is hope that overcomes, the Spirit that revives, and the bright light of our Lord and Savior to calm the turbulent soul. Breathe unto us –just as you gave us life- a deep love for you that no devil can take away. And in our devotion to you, let us learn that we are here to love one another, not to worship idols.
What does it mean to “walk as children of light?” Light is, after all, something non-human by nature. Particles in motion? Electromagnetic radiation? Paul is referring to the spiritual qualities we associate with light, and darkness, to remind us perhaps that what we are, and how we are, matters significantly to those around us. A candle in a dark room sometimes makes darkness seem scarier. Shadows can create a ghostly atmosphere, but by fixing our attention in the light, we find peace. Such is the effect of God’s people in this world. Being Christ’s church, we are not here to bask selfishly in God’s Word. We are here to spread His love around, to lead at least a busload of people to heaven.
