A Home by the Sea

An old dream of mine refuses to give up: waking up to the sun slowly rising in the horizon, light filtering through the glass panels of large windows, a caressing breeze visits the room…and departs.

Stretch in the bed, white cotton sheets, soft green pillows, looking at the view that continues to amaze year after year. Pick up the scent of fresh coffee from the kitchen, my beloved downstairs. No need to put on sandals today; the wood floors feel warm.
A kiss, a soft embrace, and he hands me the perfect blend. We exchange a loving glance; perfect peace, no needs or anxieties of any kind. I walk to the porch; my pup wants to say hi but wags his tail, instead. After a few minutes I open the garden gate and he goes out to play in the sand, without a care in the world. Took me months to teach the dog not to chew the flowers.
I hear meau, meau, meau why hasn’t my beau fed the cat? She strokes herself against my leg, doing that rrrrrrrr sound that cats make when they give affection. I can’t resist, and accompany her back to the kitchen. My husband first met her while I was away in a business trip. She came by the porch last summer, unnoticed by the dog, while Mark read the morning paper. She climbed on his lap as if they were old friends from another life. And she never left. We named her Kitty.
Our lives are immune to urgencies of any kind. The quiet whistle of the wind enhances the silence. Mark is now in the music room, perhaps composing, or playing the cello. I go up to my studio. Magazines, plants, books, acrylics, oils, pictures and seashells scattered everywhere. There is beauty in this chaos, an explosion of color and in the background the sea…

A Rainy Day

Rain meets the cello this morning. Everyone is quiet, the bird, the fish, the baby and I… each to its own activities and interests. The garden outside has become overgrown with weeds. I struggle to pull them out, thinking they deserve to live. Who am I to condemn them? Grateful for this abundance of peace, I remind myself of how precious this moment is…in the grand scheme of things. This is the stuff that turns into moments of a lifetime. Moments spent in prayer, silence, and rain. Today I do not have to get dressed for the world, go outside and smile when I do not feel like it, or encounter the bitter glances of the disillusioned. Today is about God, the blank page, a creative urge…and rain, lots of rain…softly kissing the ground upon contact, an orgasmic encounter with plants. What joy to be part of life as it thrives in this world of ours! What wisdom that binds it all…this ecosystem of prey and predator, young and old.
