“And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.”
GENESIS 22:2
God speaks to our core. His attention is not on those things we can do without. He asks only for the treasure of our heart, our whole treasure. When our love is fragmented, we might not resist the idea of letting go of what He asks for. Knowing how deep we care for our Isaac, obedience costs us more than we are ordinarily willing to give up. When we hear the voice of God clearly asking for a sacrifice, our first reaction is to lose control of our thoughts. Doubts arise. Did I really hear from God, or is this another deception of the enemy? We cry. We get angry. We search the scriptures for a way out.
When such despair haunts the spirit, take the simple path of obedience. What did He ask for? Do it. Put aside everything that stands in the way, and go about His business. Delayed obedience does not bring fulfillment. Be certain that His ways are higher than your ways. This is an opportunity to develop your faith.
After waiting a lifetime for the blessing of a son, Abraham receives the promise. He wants to hold on to Isaac, his only son. Sacrifice? Hurt the one I adore? Every time we overlook God’s love for us, we lose heart. Genesis 22:2 seems cold, unless we remember that God always has our higher blessing in mind. Manifestation of His perfect plan lingers only until our faith is pure. Do not run away from this test. Know that it develops your strength, ushering you to Moriah, the place of ultimate trust. Surrender. Do as He says.
