Seeking God in 2 KINGS

“In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amos came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.” 2 KINGS 20:1

A

s human beings we are little more than grains of sand in the beaches of eternity. Ecclesiastes reminds us that our lives are but a vapor. And yet in this present world some billion-dollar industries base their existence in the simple principle of life extension. Our collective arrogance births many spiritual delusions. Is it a man’s right to live beyond the days allotted to him by divine providence? If so, like Hezekiah, we must learn to deal with the unforeseeable consequences of opting out of, or "amending" God’s will.

Martin Luther is quoted saying “Blessed is he who submits to the will of God; he can never be unhappy.” Wisdom reminds us to let His word be the final word, knowing that all things work together for good to them that love God (Rom 8:28). And whether we live or die, let our affairs be in order, our heart steadfast in the Lord. Let us be bold as a lion when we run to His embrace, in absolute surrender to His glorious will for our lives.

How else shall we live, oh Lord and Father, if not before your presence? Where else shall we find nourishment for our soul, peace of mind, and serenity? How shall we heal our battle wounds unless you bless our inner self with the oil of joy? Hear our prayers; thine will be done. Amen.

(Martin Luther, cited by J.P. Lange, A Commentary.)
